REVIEW - BLACKEYED DEMPSEYS s/t (2013)

BlackEyed Dempseys "BlackEyed Dempseys" Self-released
Release date: 9 March 2013
Running time: 26:23, 8 tracks

Northern California’s Premier Celtic Rock Band BlackEyed Dempseys were formed in 2008. Their self-titled album was recorded in 2012 and it has been released just before Saint Patrick’s Day. They were chosen as the band of April and if you listen to their songs, you will agree with that.

Jamie Hill (vocals, guitar), Moe Crummett (guitar, background vocals), Mark Repking (banjo, mandolin), Keith Jukes (accordion, background vocals), Quinn Brentson (bass) and Josh Wagner (drums) have released the kind of album that I expect from a new band: a lot of original stuff and a distinctive sound. On this mini-album the guys have written 6 original numbers, one based on “The Parting Glass”  music (“Same Auld Flag” ) and only one cover (“The Irish Rover”). Yes, this is an overexposed song. However, Keith and Mark do a fantastic job on their rendition. I really love the manic banjo sound. And this is exactly what I mean when I talk about a distinctive sound. Banjo/mandolin, accordion and guitar work are amazing on this CD.

Every song is different and appealing. The opening number “Sail Away to Amerikay” is a catchy song. “Seven Shades of Hell” would be another single. “No Retreat” goes Celtic punk, featuring a top-notch banjo. “Free Derry” is the most Celtic punk song on the CD. It has everything: banjo, accordion, guitar and great chorus. “Sweeny’s A Working Man’s Bar” is their answer to The Tossers Teehans” .“Prodigal Song” is a slower song and “Same Auld Flag” is the rockiest number, featuring an awesome guitar work and interesting backing vocals.

Maybe the BlackEyed Dempseys self-titled album won't make the Top 5 at the end of the year. But they are honest musicians that play with passion and trust on their own compositions. They deserve to be heard and if you give them an opportunity, you’ll enjoy their songs. And the banjo wizard.

Tracklist:

1 - Sail Away to Amerikay 3:23
2 - Seven Shades of Hell 2:57
3 - Irish Rover 3:34
4 - Sweeney's , a Working Man's Bar 3:24
5 - No Retreat 4:05
6 - Free Derry 2:25
7 - Prodigal Son 3:39
8 - Same Auld Flag 2:51

NEWS - BLEEDING HEARTS - SPRING 2013

Bleeding Hearts Newsletter

Foxie's Rant
(always slightly different it just looks & sounds the same)

Gigs & Stuff

We have been doing our best to get some gigs lined up, and yippee, one or two nice festivals have duly arrived and are now up on our "Attack" page – that's otherwise known as gigs to you. We are still dangling the iron in the fire and hope to get some more come in so keep an eye out.

Nick Gibbs who used to be a full-time member of 'The Bleeders' will be joining us on fiddle for some of these festivals because, as you know, we still have a vacancy for permanent fiddler.

Partisan - The New Acoustic(ish) Album

The much anticipated (by us) acoustic(ish) album is still under development, although Ewan is getting an increasingly bigger pedalboard to match my own. I say acoustic as that is the plan but there may be the odd dash of plugged-in soundwaves in there somewhere. We can't help ourselves.

We have enough songs, and have done some pre-production but as we are going for stripped down versions of the songs, there is actually quite a bit of re-writing going on and that experimentation is holding us up. That and whatever Ewan is on as he comes up with his trippie hippie riffs, I dunno, Morris Dancers eh?! As ever at The Bleeders camp, things move slowly.

Folk'n'Glory

Oh yeah, it's received rave reviews in Rock'n'Reel and Froots as well as a multitude of other mags and online sources... you can still buy it from us even though stocks are reducing and we have no intention of re-pressing. Just ask, email, or buy online or at a gig of your choice.

Forum

Contact 'keeping it nice since 1972 Ewan Porter hyphen Stevens' if you wanna tell him a story... you can do this via our Facebook which a google reveals is 'bleedingheartsonline' apparently, or just email him at: Ewan@bleedinghearts.co.uk. If that don't work, grab him in Lichfield High Street........ sorry Brownhills, or in the pub somewhere... he likes Old Speckled Hen.

Thatcher

You may be surprised that I have not banged on about ding dong you know what. I'd rather just recite the words of my boyhood hero Billy Bragg:

"This is not a time for celebration. The death of Margaret Thatcher is nothing more than a salient reminder of how Britain got into the mess that we are in today. Of why ordinary working people are no longer able to earn enough from one job to support a family; of why there is a shortage of decent affordable housing... of why cynicism and greed became the hallmarks of our society. Raising a glass to the death of an infirm old lady changes none of this".

That said I did have rather a lot of whiskeys the day she died and thought about what she did to the Miners, The NHS, local democracy, our communities, about what happened at Hillsborough, her support for Pinochet the fascist, her condemnation of Mandela and her support for Apartheid. Yeah, what a British hero. RIP? More like good riddance.

I don't apologise for my views nor am I interested if anybody disagrees with me. The reporting of her death has hardly been balanced with the media and so-called leaders of the left saying what a wonderful woman and great Prime Minister she was. Nope, I am with Scotland on this one - she is a home wrecker and the reason the Scots will divorce us, that's her lasting legacy.

That's all for now!

FREE DOWNLOAD - PIRATE COPY "The Shape of Piracy to Come"

Pirate Copy are a six-piece pirate band hailing from Cornwall, the home of piracy, who play high octane, rum-drenched, melodic folk-punk. Their style is a raucous brand of party-hard, Ramones-sing-a-long, melodic punk rock, with a folk twist, and a hardcore vocal style which sits well with the pirate theme. Despite taking a heavy influence from Dropkick Murphys and The Pogues, elements of Andrew WK, NOFX, and Teenage Bottlerocket have also had a strong impact on their sound.

REVIEW - BRICK TOP BLAGGERS "Plastic Paddy" (2013)

Brick Top Blaggers "Plastic Paddy" Blagthis
Release date: 9 March 2013
Running time: 3 tracks, 9:55

Good news! Brick Top Blaggers, one of the best bands of 2011, is back with a kick-ass EP. Three fantastic compositions and no cover. Yes, if you were thinking that they were covering The Peelers, you are wrong: “Plastic Paddy” is a self-penned song.

Why should you buy this EP? First of all, only two of the songs will be featured on the next album. In other words, one of the tracks (“Fisherman’s Tale”) will soon become a rarity. Secondly, BTB sound and attitude are sharper and harder than ever. All the songs are really outstanding numbers. “Plastic Paddy” would be more South Chicago school than the other songs.  “Witness to My Own  Wake” would be Los Angeles school and finally “Fisherman’s Tale” would be a sort of a bridge between the Boston school and the English school.

Brick Top Blaggers sound really tight: great vocals (particularly on the first song), top-notch accordion by Matt Maulding and excellent guitar work on the first two tracks, always backed by solid band mates on fiddle, banjo and rhythm section.

The “Plastic Paddy” EP is a leap forward on the band’s career. Don’t think twice. Go ahead and buy the digipack CD with the artwork inspired by "The
Rising of the Moon.

REVIEW - PLATTROCK "A Little Cup of Sausagewater" (2012)

Plattrock " A Little Cup of Sausagewater" Calling Card Musikproduktion GmbH
Release date: 24 February 2012
Running time: 51:59, 15 tracks

The German band Plattrock was founded in 1979 as a three piece and they used to play blues, rock’n’roll. Then, in 1989, they evolved into a 7 piece folk-rock band and they labeled their music as “Northernchurchesdoublefuckingspeedfolkrock". The band was on hiatus for six years and the reunion took place in 2003. “A Little Cup of Sausagewater” was released last year and the current line-up is Matthias Kersting (lead vocals, banjo, guitars), Christian Zimmer (mandolin, guitars, bass, trombone, background vocals), Dieter Schlierkamp (guitars, bass, harmonica, background vocals), Sabine Kersting (accordion, flute, background vocals) and Martin Hagedorn (drums, percussions and background vocals).

Plattrock play their own folk-rock music with a comedy twist. Their songs are sung in four different languages: English  (12/15), French (1/15), Spanish (1/15) and Plattdütsch (1/15). Yes, it’s not Celtic rock. Anyway, don’t worry: they don’t play the usual “kitsch” German folk music.

IMHO, the best tracks on the album are “Rulla Tirulla” and the opening number “One Wild Night”. The former is the only song that is sung in the Northern German dialect (Plattdütsch). It features awesome banjo and mandolin arrangements, has a Johnny Cash sound and a kick-ass brass band at the end of the song. The latter is a catchy song featuring a great flute sound similar to the German band Mutabor.

Other tracks to check out should be the rock’nroll numbers “Every Day” (a cover) and “A Little Cup of Tea”. This one is a little bit slower , has some pop music background vocals and interesting accordion arrangements. Moreover, the lyrics are really funny. Track no. 5, “The Silent Water” features a guest cello and the sound is more Oysterband oriented. “Against the Wind” can rival with their German colleagues The Shanes and “No Longer Me” is another interesting song with great female background vocals and a rocking attitude.

Tracklist:

01 - One wild night 3:15
02 - How 2:22
03 - Every day 4:36
04 - A little cup of tea 2:15
05 - The silent water 2:14
06 - Lilli is waiting for me 4:43
07 - ¿Yo soy molesto? 3:07
08 - Outside 2:20
09 - The voice 2:37
10 - Against the wind 2:08
11 - La douleur dépasse 5:31
12 - Don’t leave me 4:56
13 - No longer me 3:43
14 - Rulla Tirulla 3:58
15 - I shout out 4:08

PRESS RELEASE - STÖJ SNAK

April 09, 2012,

Today, Danish screamer-songwriter outfit Stöj Snak releases the critically acclaimed "Songs about Beliefs" on orange cassette and digital download via 5FeetUnder Records (DK) and YLLS Records (CAN).

The b-side of the tape contains the entire "Songs About Beliefs" recorded live. The download also contains an unreleased bonus track.
You can stream the entire record on Stöj Snak’s website.

Stream and order the record:
http://music.stojsnak.com

Special promo deal (incl. exclusive t-shirt) can be ordered here:

http://youlooklikeshit.storenvy.com/

ABOUT SONGS ABOUT BELIEFS

The record was written, recorded and produced by highly productive Niels Höjgaard Sörensen - the man behind Stöj Snak - and originally released on orange vinyl in November 2012. The record follows "Planned Obsolescence", released April 2012. On "Songs About Beliefs" Stöj Snak has invited a lot of different musicians and friends to join him, creating a more layered sound that still remains true to the uncompromising folkcore that Stöj Snak displayed on the debut.

The Record has already reached high critically acclaim around the world. To mention a few:

“Amazing artwork, amazing lyrics and message, idealism, songs for your soul.”
5/5 – Empty Zine

“…a definite must have. A really honest and heartfelt record, you won’t hear any better than this!”
Lights Go Out Fanzine

"This is music with heart and soul, topped off with great vocal melodies that on at least two occasions showcases world-class songwriting."
8/10 – Rockfreaks.net

“Probably the best thing to come out of Denmark after “The Killing” TV series.”
Celticfolkpunk.blogspot.com

Niels has musical roots deep in the underground soil and he has travelled most of Europe and even as far as Russia with the melodic hardcore band Mighty Midgets. The band has a number of releases under their belt and has reached great acclaim in the underground but remained below the mainstream radar.

Stöj Snak takes a step away from the punk sound but remains true to the DIY ethics and political outlook of the scene. It also does not take long to find the punk energy in Stöj Snak’s music which has been described as if Bob Dylan was the playing in Green Day – especially live where Stöj Snak, only armed with just a guitar, a harmonica and a lamp, have incited to heavy sing-along and well as both mosh pits and crowd surfing.

REVIEW - SIR REG "21st Century Loser" (2012)

SIR REG "21st Century Loser" Heptown Records HTR066 CD/HTR222 LP
Release date: 5 April 2013
Running time: 42:36, 12 tracks

When I got SIR REG’s single “ ‘Till the Dead Come Alive” my first impression was that the sound was a little bit harder than that of their previous albums. Then the album arrived and, even if the first song was pure anger, I felt that there were too many quiet moments on the CD. I don’t know why I drew that conclusion, since there are only 3 and a half “slow” songs.

I have been listening to this album continuously and I must admit that it has grown on me. No, “21st Century Loser” is not a direct album. One needs several hearings to appreciate it. Perhaps the best word to describe this CD would be risky. The Swedish band has evolved and maybe a part of their fan base, those who prefer basic Celtic punk to new musical directions, could be disappointed. Anyway, as far as I know, “21st Century Loser” has got rave reviews so far.

All the tracks on this album have the SIR REG DNA on it. I have said that they have evolved, but don’t expect something like Flogging MollySpeed of Darkness”.  Brendan and his band mates have followed a logical direction remaining faithful to their identity. They have chosen “ ‘Till the Dead Come Alive” as first single. Other bands would have picked up “Raise Your Hands” or “We’ll Rise Again”. Those numbers are catchy, “simple” and effective. But SIR REG know that when you want to win, you have to bet.

The arrangements and chorus, poppier than on previous releases, highlight all over the album. This is not something new, since Brit-pop elements can be listened on both “Sir Reg” and “A Sign of the Times”.  The first part of “At the End of The World” could be filed together with the LevellersHello Pig” album.  And “Walking into Doors” is a haunting song. I was missing a song like “Far Away” when I realized that in fact there was something better. I feel that the Gallagher brothers  from Oasis would love it too. “City of Tragedy” is a poignant ballad. Sometimes I link it with those metal bands from the 80’s (for instance, Scorpions). However, knowing that Brendan is a big fan of David Bowie, I guess that this, together with the closing number “21st Century Loser Part II”, could be influenced by the Chameleon.

But if you are at the Celtic punk end, don’t worry: there are plenty to choose from: “All that Remains”, “21st Century Loser”,  “Emigrate”, the single, “Raise your Hands” and “We’ll Rise Again”.

As far as the lyrics are concerned, Brendan has pushed forward on social issues. I would say that the lyrics on this album and Henning Mankell’s crime books are the two sides of a coin. The fall of the Welfare State is present on every Wallander enquiry. Brendan is not as raw as Mankell, but, in the end, they are talking about the same subjects.

21st Century Loser” is already a critically acclaimed album. Now it's time for the fans to decide if they support the evolution of the band.

REVIEW - THE LAGAN "Where's Your Messiah Now?" (2013)

The Lagan "Where's Your Messiah Now" Banquet Records KT1-038
Release date: 17 March 2013
Running time: 36:19, 10 tracks

The long awaited debut album by The Lagan (fiddle, tin whistle, ukulele, guitar, bass and drums) was released last St. Patrick’s Day and charted at #3 in the UK Record Store Album Charts. The 10 songs on “Where’s Your Messiah Now?” can be divided into three groups: those previously released on the ”Work Away” EP, the new original songs and some trad. numbers.

Regarding the “old” songs, the new arrangements on “Work Away” and, particularly, on “Sunny Day in Southie” have given them a new lease of life.

As far as the  “new”  songs  are concerned “Staring the Devil in the Eye” and “Sailin’ East” are awesome numbers in the classic Celtic punk vein. The former is more “epic” and the latter is the bastard son of Dropkick Murphys and the Levellers. On the other hand, “Same Shite, Different Night”, a kick-ass song,  is in tune with the new wave of English Celtic punk/pirate bands.

When I first saw the tracklist I felt that “The Good Ship Lagan” could be a cover of Planxty’s “The Good Ship Kangaroo”. However, I was wrong. In fact, The Lagan have written their own lyrics to the classic “Drunken Sailor”. This song, together with their rendition of “Star of the Co. Down”, shows the Caribbean side of the band. “The Good Ship Lagan” has a ska beat and “Star of the County Down” is a reggae that turns into a ska number.

Where’s Your Messiah Now?” is a labour of love. Great digipack package and amazing artwork. As they state on the liner notes, this is their first album, and those words are something they never really expected to say.  They explain that this was their first set and the first songs they wrote. There is a good balance between their Celtic punk end and their Celtic ska end. However, taking into account that their own material is really strong,  I would have given more weight  to the self-penned songs  and recorded less traditional material. Anyway, “Where’s Your Messiah” is a highly recommendable album.

Tracklist:

1. Staring The Devil In The Eye 4:05
2. Sailin' East 2:56
3. Work Away 3:56

6. Sunny Day In Southie 3:57
7. I'll Tell Me Ma 2:12
8. The Good Ship Lagan 4:37
