REVIEW - BASTARDS ON PARADE "TALES FROM THE DEATH SHORE" Carnage Records (2011)

Yup, the Bastards are back! Galicia’s own Bastards on Parade seem to have tossed aside their “annual 4-track E.P.” motif operandi with their latest offering, the full-length CD, Tales from the Death Shore.

But this is hardly the only change for this band with this release! The Bastards’ journey of evolution seems to be similar to that of one of their main influence’s, The Dropkick Murphys. But with each step, the band moved ever away from being yet another DKM-esque Paddy-Punk outfit. And with Tales from the Death Shore, the Bastard’s have begun to well and truly carve out their own place in this ever-growing field.

Without question, the Bastards have the song-craft down. This would probably be where many of the lesser bands have stumbled, but where BoP truly shine. They have honed their style to be a solid, rocking, yet accessible Celtic Folk-Punk sound, seamlessly incorporating all instruments, (guitars, bass, gaita, drums, whistle and mandolin,) into each song to create a true focus. But this has always been the strength of this band. And happily, this is still the case on Tales from the Death Shore.

No, it is Identity that seems to be the Hydra tackled on this release.

You see, early on, the Bastards decided to incorporate the gaita, (or Galician bagpipe,) into their instrumentation. Now, I don’t know if this was a conscious choice to assert the band’s Galician identity, or one made out of necessity from the availability of pipers in the Galician area, but I do know that it has lent a nice cultural signature to the band’s music.

And now, on Tales From the Death Shore, a distinct accent in the vocals has become apparent. Far more-so than with the Bastards' previous three releases. Now, call me paranoid, or simply over-analyzing, but I can’t help wondering if this is, again, a conscious decision to express the Iberian-Celtic identity of the band. If this was a planned one, it is not only a good idea, but one that has proven successful for band influences, The Dropkick Murphys, (Ken Casey’s Boston accent drips all over every one of that band’s material.)

And then there are the songs themselves. Local references are peppered amongst Tales from the Death Shore, (most noticeably in the immediately catchy track, Gaelic,) but the inclusion of two Galician traditional tunes, all “Bastardized up” to BoP standards; opener Marcha do Antigo Reino de Galiza, (“The March of the Old Kingdom of Galicia,”) and “Chantada’s Jig,” (also known as Muiñeira de Chantada, one of Galicia’s most popular folk tunes!), really cements this argument.

Now, the incorporation of cultural pride is fine, expressing feelings toward one’s home, an’ all that, and makes for great subject matter for any band. However, in the case of the Bastards on Parade, it really elevates the band up to a higher level. It gives the band more personality, not just the authors of a collection of songs. This metamorphosis is either a very smart marketing move, or an extremely fortunate development. It also makes for some damned good listening.

In the Celtic Folk-Punk genre, there are a few well-overused clichés: the old “Shane-like” vocals, massive accordion-focused production, and the most blatant, and tired of all, the excessive drinking songs. Used in moderation, a good drinking song is great. However, nothing but drinking songs makes a band come across as shallow; a one-trick pony. The Bastards have successfully avoided all of these pitfalls, throughout their brief yet productive career to date. And the inclusion of Galician traditional songs and tunes can only open up the ink-well for further material for these guys!

After all, it is the songs that are the meat and potatoes of any good CD. And this is a really good CD! The Galician elements add a nice flavor to the mix, but nothing here is too “foreign” or unusual. Every track, (or should I say, "Tale!") is accessible and familiar and in keeping with the BoP sound. My personal faves on the disc, (aside from the aforementioned ‘Gaelic,’ which I dig a lot!) must be the moody and introspective ‘Raging Sea’, the staunch and proud battle hymn, ‘(Black) Flags and Torches,’ and what might be considered the band’s first official single from this release, the driving and unrelenting, ‘Infamous,’ with its rousing chorus and pervasive mandolin wandering.

I have been lucky enough to follow along with Bastards on Parade’s growth and evolution, and although I know that Tales from the Death Shore is only the current stage in their development, it is really good one. Thanks, guys!

File under “highly recommended.”

REVIEW - THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY "LIFE LESSONS & DRUNKEN SESSIONS" 7 TRACK EP

The Ramshackle Army “Life Lessons and Drunken Sessions”
Release date: 1st May 2011
Running Time: 20:20, 7 tracks

When The Hornswagglers broke at the beginning of 2010 I must admit that I felt sad. I had enjoyed their songs and had the impression that they deserved to be heard by a bigger audience. Fortunately some ex-Hornswagglers were involved in a new project and The Ramshackle Army was born mid-2010.

The Ramshackle Army released some demos in which it was obvious that, even if they shared some members with The Hornswagglers, they were a different band. Some of the songs were included in the Fire in the Pub sampler that was posted in June 2010, then you will agree with me that both The Ramshackle Army’s sound and songwriting were awesome.

Almost a year later, the band fronted by Gaz is releasing their debut EP “Life Lessons & Drunken Sessions”, a collection of 7 excellent songs. Neither pipes, nor accordion are featured on this EP. However the band has developed their own sound based on a dynamic singer (Gaz), a wonderful fiddler (Kat) and a great banjo/mandolin player (Loc) backed by very good musicians on guitar and rhythm section (Nath - guitar, Jig - bass and Adge - drums)

The band recently released a video of the opening track, “Uprising Young Citizen”, so I guess that most of the fans will be familiar with this song. Fiddle, banjo and great vocals and chorus. The kind of sing-along song that any band should have in their setlist to start a show.

The next song, "Rue the Day", goes in a different way and features mandolin instead of banjo, but is also as powerful as the previous one.

The third song, “No Rest for the Wicked”, is also well-known, since a previous version was included in the demos.

Track no. 4 and track no. 5 are stuck together. “Life Lessons & Drunken Sessions” is basically an arranged version of “The Cooley's Reel” played at a slower pace When the tune ends, there is a banjo led transition part. The song seems to be calm, but the chorus is really strong.

The last two songs are my faves, together with “Rue the Day”. “Fire is Burning” is amazing! Do you like “The Night Paddy Murphy Died”? “Fire is Burning” is that kind of song, the one you expect to hear at St.Patrick’s Day. I guess that the sound is influenced by the Australian bush music.

The final track is also grand. Imagine that Billy Bragg , Paul Simmonds and Swill (both from The Men They Couldn’t Hang) are drinking together at a pub while they are listening to DKMCaught in a Jar”. If they decided to write a song together, it would be this.

Ah, and the package design is also excellent, including lyrics, liner notes and a picture of the band.

The Australian scene is full of interesting acts: The Go Set, Catgut Mary, The Currency, The Rumjacks … and now The Ramshackle Army.

I love bands like The Ramshackle Army, the bands that take risks. It would have been easier for them to use other instruments or to copy the style of one of the other well-known Australian bands. However, they have followed a different approach and I'm sure that this will pay.

Tracklist:

01 – Uprising Young Citizen 3:06
02 – Rue The Day 2:50
03 – No Rest for the Wicked 3:22
04 – Life Lessons & Drunken Sessions 0:57
05 – Bays End Guns 3:54

REVIEW: SAINTS AND SINNERS "PUBCRAWLERS" 7" EP, DGR003 (2011)

Saints & Sinners : Pubcrawlers EP 7"
Dirty Guys Rock DGR003
Release date: January 2011
Running time: 13:17, 4 tracks

Saints and Sinners is a new band from Tours (France). The band released a demo CD (which was sold out) and one of their songs, "Blood, Heart & Memory", was included in the CD digipack V/A Dirty Guys Rock Vol.01.

This four piece (guitar, fiddle, bass and drums) has already played on the same bill with bands such as Jamie Clarke's Perfect or the Czech Pipes and Pints (in fact, they have played several shows together). Right now they are playing a couple of shows together with Bastards on Parade on the French leg of their "Tales from the Death Shore" European Tour.

Pubcrawlers” is a 4 track vinyl EP which is more folk punk than Celtic punk. My fave track is the first one, a fiddle-led catchy song with a sound similar to that of The Porters.

The next track , "Mac Ragan", features harmonica and is also stripped-down punk song.

No Way Layout” is the other song that stands out, a good sing-along folk punk song which can be filed together with some Boston punk bands.

The last track, “Saints and Sinners” have some Clash influence and is also quite enjoyable.

It is interesting to see that little by little the folk/Celtic punk scene is also growing in France.

Tracklist:

A01 - Pubcrawlers 3:47
A02 - Mac Ragan 2:36

B01 - No Way Layout 3:17
B02 - Saints & Sinners 3:33

REVIEW: SCRUM "KILLING TIME" SCR 006 (2010)

Scrum “Killing Time”
Scrum SCR 006
Release date: 2010
Running time: 52:43, 15 tracks

I recently got an e-mail from a fan: “Hi Man, I’ve just come across this Dutch band. You should check them. They are better than Mr. Irish Bastard and Circle J, deffo!” Better than Mr. Irish Bastard and Circle J? I had to check them, of course.

Scrum is a six piece band that has released a couple of studio albums and an acoustic live mini-album. “Killing Time”, their second studio album, was released at the end of 2010 and features guitar banjo, mandolin, bagpipes, tin whistle, fiddle, bass and drums. After having listened to the album for the last 10 days I had to say that this will be one of the Top 3 albums of 2011. At least, it’s the best album that I have reviewed this year. A top-notch band, great vocals by Skottie, excellent fiddling by Maurits and piping by Barney, and the rest of the band are also top level musicians. A real Celtic rock band with a punk edge, these guys can rival the likes of Flogging Molly, Firkin, Fiddler’s Green or Paddy and the Rats.

The songwriting duties are shared by Skottie (Robin Slutter: vocals, guitar, banjo and mandolin), Marco Huselboos (bass, vocals) and Robin Abma (guitar, vocals). Lyrics about love, losers, modern society, Scotland, pubs … Fifteen tracks, only 3 covers and no clunker!!! I love these guys.

The best tracks of the album? It’s not easy to pick only three or four, all of them are great. Anyway, listen carefully to tracks such as “A Song About Absolutely Nothing”, “Fucks Ups”, “Killing Time”, “Under The Scotman’s Kilt” and “No Rain in the Pub”. Great sing-along and party songs.

Killing Time”: a Flogging Molly influenced song, fiddle, banjo and bass at the highest level.

Final Victory”: another party song. The fiddle reminds me of Paddy and the Rats, great chorus and excellent pipes.

No Rain in the Pub”. These guys love Scottish music, but this polka song is the evidence that they also enjoy the the Sliabh Luachra polkas.

Caledonia” Yes, Scrum love Scottish music. Top-notch version of this Dougie MacLean’s classic song. It features additional vocals by Laura Heitink and bagpipes and percussion at the end of the song.

Dreamfighters”. More party songs. Great hard rock vocals and good work on the fiddle and whistle in a Paddy and the Rats meet Bob Geldof at his “Vegetarians of Love” era song.

A Song about Absolutely Nothing” My fave. Skottie plays his mandolin. Then Barney plays his tin whistle. Then the rest of the band join them. And that Brian May style guitar just before Skottie go mad…

The Hills of the Highlands” No, it isn’t a cover. Skottie has written the music and the lyrics are written by both Alexander Anderson and Skottie. Obviously, it features Barney’s bagpipes.

Fucks Up” My second best. Now I understand why that guy told me that they are better than Circle J. Another Flogging Molly banjo led influenced song. The end of the song is amazing too!

Loch Lomond”. Yes it’s a standard, but the boys have recorded an a capella version.

Pirate Song” Celtic Rock, Celtic punk, Scottish ballads… and now a Pirate Song. These guy are really versatile, specially Skottie’s vocals: “Never touch me Rum!!!!"

The Royal Oak” The second song about pubs. It reminds me of the songs that Paddy Schmidt used to sing when he was the leader of the German band Paddy Goes to Holyhead. See you in the pub!

Under the Scotman’s Kilt”. A very good version of the song that was recorded by the songwriter from Tennessee Mike Cross back in 1979. The structure of the song is similar to that of “A Song About Absolutely Nothing”. First of all, Skottie plays his mandolin and then the storm bursts.

Whisky Lullaby”. More hard rock influences and fiddling similar to Paddy and the Rats.

Going Home” Maybe the most Dropckick Murphys style song of the album: great chrorus and f*cking good pipes. As good as Black Tartan Clan’s best moments.

In the Arms of an Angel”. A lament in loving memory of James Slutter, 29 october 2005-17 April 2209. The vocals by Skottie come really from the depth of his soul.

Regarding the packaging, hats-off to Scrum. A digipack in which the window on the front is cut, pics of all the band members and a 20 page booklet with all the lyrics (including the covers) the credits and liner notes.

It is clear that I have really enjoyed “Killing Time”, since this band is a true gem. Now I’m wondering where I have spent the last 5 years. It’s time to get their previous albums!

Gerap Gurita is a Yogyakarta (Indonesia) band that wears Celtic colors with pride. Now Gerap Gurita has come back with their first album “Pilihan”. Anom, with his own musically style, and Ainx, with his new accordion, have turned the music up to more “Indonesian” although we can still feel the Irish atmosphere in their album. What has emerged from this album is a completely new Gerap Gurita, mature, focused, and rooted in a timeless classic Punk Rock sound. This album is completely different from their earlier EP, it’s more colorful.

Gerap Gurita also have added two new members to the band, they are Indra (thin-whistle) and Keke (Saxophone) who have helped the band to find their own characteristic. Aspects of Flogging Molly and The Tossers still shine through the band harmonizing with the band’s musical style. The track "Kembali" reveals the comeback of the band from hiatus, and is one of the noticeable tracks on "Pilihan". “Kembali” is also the first single of the band that many fans can still enjoy on the radio. There's a passion behind Ainx's accordion sound on the song “Kembali” that is able to make a lot of kids get surprised and many fans who have heard Gerap Gurita first EP will certainly be wandering pointlessly and confused. This album is a progression, "Pilihan" offers a new style on Gerap Gurita's songs like “Kepercayaan”, not heard before . "Kepercayaan" is the second single from the band.

Gerap Gurita has found their own musical style and they still remain focused on song craft. Almost all the songs of the band are decidedly upbeat and energetic except the track “Untuk Kawan” that has big mourning sing-along reff and "Self Control" takes the accordion work into horror territories. After hearing "Pilihan", it’s clear that the band has emerged clearly pointed in a different direction. "Pilihan" is Gerap Gurita's best work to date; it's honest.

VIDEO - SCRUM "KILLING TIME" AND MORE

"Scrum: The #1 powerfolk band from The Netherlands, combining the love for rock, folk and whisky in a mixture of honest, raw (punk)rock songs, ballads and traditionals and drinking tunes!

Early 2004 a couple of friends decided to start a band which would be based on their mutual interests in Irish and Scottish music and culture. Only a couple of weeks after their first rehearsel they were invited to come and perform at the Veenhoop Festival. From that moment on things began to speed up and a year later Scrum returned to that same festival, being welcomed by the audience as if they had been around for ages. Soon after that Scrum recorded a 5 track live demo, purely for promotional purposes. But the people who had been following Scrum so far found out about the album and “demanded” a copy for themselves as well.

This and the fact that the number of fans was steadily growing made Scrum decide to write new material and in December 2006 their first studio album “Pro Libertate” saw the light of day.“Pro Libertate” was being received very well by both audience and critics and soon Scrum would be playing their “straight in your face” gigs all over the country, very often being booked as the headliner of festivals.

In October 2008 Scrum performed at the Celtic Folk Festival in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, playing purely acoustic for the very first time in their existence. Irish folk heroes The Dubliners were headlining that same festival and singer Skottie and guitarist Robin were invited by The Dubliners to play along during their encore “The Wild Rover”.

The adrenalin rush accompanied by the enthusiasm of the audience that day made Scrum once again decide to release yet another mini album which they –by coincidence- recorded during their performance. Simply called “Scrum – Live Acoustic”, on this album the lads show another side of their musical capabilities and the idea of playing acoustic more often had been born.

In July 2009 Scrum were invited to play at the Skagen Folk Festival in Skagen, Denmark, where they performed 2 nights in a row with great succes.

These two shows, during which both audience and band were having a ball and the fan base being expanded even more, emphasised the power and transparency of Scrum. Only a couple of weeks later Scrum was being re-booked for 2010, playing even larger venues during the festival.

October 2010:

- Scrum release a new album entitled “Killing Time
- their first acoustic theatre tour “A Night at the Pub” is a fact;
- a brand new website is launched.

Scrum will keep on hitting the road as often as possible, with an increasing interest from venues and festivals in countries outside The Netherlands, such as Denmark, Belgium, France and Norway which the band will be visiting somewhere in 2011.

The Official Scrum website will be updated as often as possible so you can always find the latest news on the band, tour dates, merchandise and anything else that’s going on.

Please, leave a message in our guestbook if you feel like it or sign up to our very own FREE online fanclub magazine “The Post”.

Hopefully we’ll get to meet one another somewhere out there and if so, make sure to come over and shake hands after the gig. We’re always in for a good chat and a pint of beer!

Take care, Slainte!"

The story of the "Killing Time" Official video:

"Dear friends,

About a year ago Skottie decided it would be fun to write a script for a video-clip for what would eventually turn out to be our current single ”Killing Time”. After having been laying around for a while it has been dusted off. We came in contact with director/cameraman Site Steendam and asked him to take a good look at the script and consider taking part in this project. After having read the script Site agreed to take on the challenge of shooting a videoclip with the Scrum gang. From that moment on things went rapidly and after a short period of gathering props, looking for decent shooting sites and fine tuning of the script D-Day had arrived.

Because all the preliminary work had been done properly we have been able to shoot the entire clip in one day. Everything went very smootly and during the pub scenes which were shot in the evening we have had a lot of help from friends from all over the country who were so kind to come over to do their part as “pub crowlers”.

Then of course the editing part had to be done and after making some calls and sending some e-mails back and forth the final result is here to be revealed today! And we’re very proud of yet another chapter in the always exciting Scrum story!! As always we’re very curious about what you think of it and we’re looking forward to your responses!!

Scrum once again is going to try and get some attention from the Dutch “national radio police” which hasn’t been a simple task so far, unfortunately. But as you may know from Scrum: We’ll never give up! We’ll keep on going, head first, like we do on stage!!

But we’re calling for your assistance…

Our single “Killing Time” is available for downloading at the Killing Time - Single - Scrum -store as well as on Legal Download. If we join forces by downloading the single in a great number the ladies and gentlemen of Dutch radio can no longer deny Holland’s number one Powerfolk band and their huge fan base!! Don’t you agree it’s about time new bands get their fair share of airplay on the radio?

To go short: Order yourself one beer less and buy that single!

We really hope you’ll enjoy watching our videoclip and hopefully we’ll get to meet again soon, somewhere out there on the road, in The Netherlands or abroad!"

SIR REG - NEW SINGLE "FAR AWAY"

"Delighted to announce the official release of our new single "Far Away".

Am sure a lot of you recognize it from our live shows over the past year or so.

Available on iTunes, Amazon etc. and streaming on our Myspace and Reverbnation pages."

SIR REG – Far Away single OUT NOW!

SIR REG releases Far Away — a single from their forthcoming album. The song is released in April in honour of the 95th anniversary of the “Easter Rising”, an attempt by Irish republicans in 1916 to end the British rule in order to establish the Irish Republic. The song pays homage to the young Irish soldiers who fought and died in WW1 in infantries under the British Army. Many fought with the notion that their efforts would help further the cause for an independent Ireland, free from British rule.

The Easter Rising started in Ireland on April the 24th, 1916 and lasted one week. Meanwhile WW1 was in full swing and young Irish soldiers fought in the trenches in France. Among these were The Royal Dublin Fusiliers, an Irish Infantry Regiment of the British Army, and they kept fighting at the same time as the Rising was happening back home in Ireland. In the middle of the seven day Rising, on the night of the 27th of April, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers suffered a heavily-concentrated German chlorine gas attack which left 135 soldiers dead and 351 wounded. This song tells their story.

Although the times were different, the song remains the same. History keeps repeating itself. Even today soldiers are stuck in hellish places and dream of friends, family and loved ones back home. The one’s who survive to come home, will be forever scarred.

REVIEW: VARIOUS ARTISTS - "Whiskey Devils - A Tribute to The Mahones" Whiskey Devil Records (2010)

V.A. “Whiskey Devils-A Tribute to The Mahones”
Whiskey Devils Records
Release date: 2011
19 tracks

"Whiskey Devils" is a special release to celebrate The Mahones 20th Anniversary. Nineteen bands and/or artists from both sides of the Atlantic playing eighteen Mahones’ songs.

When a tribute album has to be reviewed, there are always two questions: Frst of all, do the listener miss some bands? And, secondly, is the tracklist exactly what a hardcore Mahones fan should expect?

We could discuss a whole year and perhaps we wouldn’t reach an agreement, but I feel that the answer to the first question is easy: all the bands (five U.S. bands, five Canadian bands, four English bands, three Spanish bands and two Irish artists) are worth hearing and they do a fine job .

Regarding the second one, the answer may also differ from a fan to another. So, I will give you some figures:

• 18 songs (“Drunken Lazy Bastard” is covered twice)
• 11 of the original tracks can be found on “Irish Punk Collection
• 10 of the original tracks can be found on “Paint the Town Red-The Best of The Mahones
• 5 of the original tracks can be found on “Draggin’ The Days
• 5 of the original tracks can be found on “Rise Again
• 3 of the original tracks can be found on “The Hellfire Club Sessions
• 3 of the original tracks can be found on “Here Comes Lucky
• 1 of the original tracks can be found on “Take No Prisoners
• The other track can be found on “The Black Irish

If you enjoy the early albums and if you prefer “Irish Punk Collection” to “Paint the Town Red-The Best of The Mahones”, then you will be happy with the tracklist. But if you feel (like me) that “Here Comes Lucky” is their best album and you prefer “Paint the Town Red” to “Irish Punk Collection”, then you will miss songs such as “Dragging the Days”, “When it Comes Around”, “One Last Shot”, “Here Comes Lucky” or “Will You Marry Me

As I have previously said, all the bands have done a fine job. However, if I had to say which are the best covers, I would choose those songs which have been re-worked and which add something special to the original. I will comment them in normal order, from the beginning to the end.

The opening track, “Drunken Lazy Bastard” covered by The Popes has been a wonderful surprise to me. I didn’t enjoy their last album,“Outlaw Heaven”, but their rendition of that Mahones’ classic is really great. Excellent banjo and fiddle arrangements. And those child voices singing “Get up out of bed….” are the evidence that you don’t need to be raucous to sound angry.

Brutus’ Daughters stand out too. They have really worked on their cover, “Take Me Back”, and added that bagpipes and fiddle duel that is their stamp. One of my faves.

Paul-Ronny Angel from the Urban Voodoo Machine fame covers “London”. The song features harmonica, fiddle, banjo and tin whistle, the rhythm is the right one and his cover is one of the best.

Another “must”, Drink Hunters covering “Take No Prisoners”. Other band that has spent some time to make something special with their song. A Californian punk version with top-notch fiddle and accordion.

Finny says that The Ryan BrothersStreets of New York” is his all-time favourite version. I understand why. This unplugged version haunts you.

Aaron Chapman (ex Real McKenzies, The Town Pants member) pushes “Cocktail Blue” in the right direction and adds exactly what the song was asking for. Aaron, a new crooner?

Paddy McCallion´s “Back Home” acoustic version is another of the gems of this tribute album.

The first time I saw the tracklist I was wondering why “Drunken Lazy Bastard” had been covered twice. After having listened to this live rendition I must admit that both The Popes and Cabor Toss versions should be included in the tribute album.

For those who prefer the covers that are close to the original, try The PeelersRise Again” (great fiddle and accordion), The Roughneck RiotAcross the USA” (the only band that would be able to back Finny in the same way his band does), The Vandon Arms (another band with a great mandolin player), The Bloody Irish BoysShake Hands with the Devil” …. There are plenty to choose.

I guess that Finny must be happy with the whole album. The influence of The Mahones on the Celtic punk scene is bigger than some people may think and I feel that this tribute album has been a good opportunity to enjoy the friendship and respect of a lot of buddies.
