Vol. VIII SERBIA & CROATIA

Volume 8th includes bands from Serbia and Croatia. I have decided to include Irish Stew of Sindidun, even if they are well-known after their second album, but not to put other well known bands such as Belfast Food (Croatia) and the Orthodox Celts (Serbia), with a longer discography.

http://belfastfood.com

http://orthodoxcelts.com

As it has already been said, Irish Stew of Sindidun (Serbia) has released a couple of albums and they have shown their maturity with the excellent second CD.

Dare to Dream (2008)

In the sampler you will find 4 tracks from the first album and 5 tracks from the second one.

www.irishstew.net

The next band, Great Drunkards, are also from Serbia. Their discography only includes a 6 tracks demo

In the sampler I have included 5 tracks from the demo

The third band is Shamrock (Croatia). They have released a demo and an EP

FREE DOWNLOADS - BLEEDING HEARTS

Bleeding Hearts
is another Fiddle-Folk-Punk band from England. Their albums include "Fly in the Face of Fashion" (2000), "Anarcoustica" (2002), "The Merchants of Propaganda" (2003), "Bose Liebe EP" (2005) and "Politics and Love" (2006).

The band has just released a live album, "Red, White, Blue & Green" and it is totally free:

"Live Album – Out At last!

Yup, you may have noticed it's now on-line on our website and free at that. We want to draw a line under it now, it's been a reet 'ol nightmare it has! Even the final mastering at home conspired to waste and lose the version of “Propaganda” that I had to roll back an old version and use that instead. I hope the fat lady has now sung. Overall, it sounds good given the problems we had from start to finish. Free mp3's, that's our gift to you for your patience and our desire to release it swiftly. Enjoy!"

Biography (copyright: Bleeding Hearts)

"dance to it, listen to it, can’t ignore it!!"

"A traditional guitar band with a bucketful of anger, emotion, great big tunes and a lot to say. They combine big guitars with powerful rhythms and strong 3 part harmony vocals shouted and sung with raw passion. They have an originality all of their own which has helped them support name acts and get great tours all over Europe and America. An excellent festival band that combine an exciting full-on live show with moments of acoustic reflection and an important cultural message which also retains a big element of fun.

Bleeding Hearts have played to crowds in excess of 5000 and taken a phenomenal live show to Festivals and venues across the U.K., Europe and North America.

Bleeding Hearts have received critical acclaim in the music press, supported named acts, wowed Glastonbury and developed a growing band of enthusiastic and loyal followers.

Releases:

Over the past few years Bleeding Hearts have released 2 EP's and 6 Albums. One of their releases, 'Fly in the Face of Fashion', has received critical acclaim in the music press, being described as:- 'thirteen tracks of passion, justification, revolution and revelation' (Froots).

Gigs:
Demand for Bleeding Hearts has taken them across the U.K., Europe, and North America. Highlights include Glastonbury Festival, Farmyard Party Festival, Storming The Castle Festival, Highland Festivals, Glasgow Mayfest, Inverness Festival, Pigstock Festival, Gig In The Park Festival, Arlington Court Festival, Coleford Festival, Monmouth Festival, Riverside Festival, Stamford Festival, Cheltenham Fringe Festival (U.K.), Terschelling Musicfest (Holland), Misselbach Festival, Out In The Corn Festival (Austria), Leipzig Festival, Frankfurt Speedfolk Festival, Staatsforsten Festival, Dalmstock Festival, Taubertal (Germany), and the Sunshine Coast Festival (Canada).

In fact, over the past 2 years Bleeding Hearts have supported acts such as The Darkness, Fishbone, Miles Hunt, Die Happy, Die Artze, The Damned, The Levellers and The Oysterband."

You can download the tracks one by one from the band's website (first link). As usual, I have put all the tracks together at mediafire (second link)

Redhill Rats are a band from Helsinki (Finland). Most of the tracks from their debut album and all of the tracks from their second album are available at www.isound.com (see below)

This is the biography of the band (copyright: Redhill Rats)

"Redhill Rats was formed, many years ago, as a traditional Irish music band. Other influences, however, crept in gradually.

When the musical form was liberated from excessive Irishness, original material began to emerge. Our years in Paddyland have left their mark in the new songs, of course, but so have other musical styles like British folk, Americana, Bluegrass and various forms of pop and rock.

We suppose we can call this folkrock, as there are quite a few acoustic instruments involved."

FREE DOWNLOADS - TRICKS UPON TRAVELLERS

Tricks upon Travellers are a sadly defunct band. They released a couple of mini albums ("Cilla Taped" and "The Last Fish Supper"), a studio album ("Where the Skeletons Dance") and a acoustic live farewell album ("Live and Acoustic")

Their best recording is still available at cdbaby.com.

The following text (copyright: Favis-Mortlock) is about the first years of the band and was written by the old fiddler.

"From 1985 to 1994 I played electric fiddle in manic Brighton folk-punk band Tricks Upon Travellers (TUT). The lineup varied, but Graeme Hobbs was always the vocalist, and Dick Langford the guitarist, and me. Sometimes we were a full seven-piece band (e.g. with Dulles Foster on drums, Martin Sharpe also on guitar, Mike Skinner on bass, and Jules Lawrence on sax and flute) while at other times we gigged with drum and bass machines ("the perfect blend of sweat and technology", as Graeme once put it). Our songs (almost all by Graeme and Dick), had titles like "Jelly", "Another Zombie Bloodbath", "Invasion of the Slug Creatures", etc.

Tricks Upon Travellers was a great name: and we mostly sounded pretty good (one c. 1991 review in Rock'n'Reel described TUT as having a "... varied musical background helping them create a clever mix of sound"). And the band was a lot of fun to be in (if somewhat argumentative at times). "

This is the official biography of the band (copyright: Mark "Madfiddler" Knight")

"Tricks Upon Travellers, or TUT as they were fondly known, was formed in Brighton by good friends Dick Langford and Graeme Hobbs in 1984. They'd previously played bands together and TUT seemed to be the natural next step to provide a platform for Graeme's Iggy Pop/John Lydon like personality, and Dick's vibrant sound writing style. Joining them later, from 1985, on bass were Mike Skinner, Martin Sharpe on guitar, drummer Dulles Foster, fiddle player David Favis-Mortlock, and flutist/whistle and sax player Jules Lawrence. TUT picked up a good crowd playing the circuit on the south coast of England and gained a reputation as being one of THE top Folk Rock bands in the country. During this period, the band release a 3 track cassette called "Bed Heaven" (which contained Bed Heaven, Blame and Circus Maximus) and their first CD release, strangely named "Cilla Taped".

Mark 'madfiddler' Knight picked up the violin after a three year break and joined the band in 1994, replacing Mortlock. Early in '95 Martin left so TUT went down to having a single guitarist in the band. During the latter half of that year they recorded "The Last Fish Supper", which was released in '96. Whilst this kept the familiar Folk Rock sound the band were known for, there was also a hint of where the band were moving towards in the track "Porton Down" where the violin takes an very unfolk rock (and slightly out of tune) distorted solo... The shape of things to come? Fish came out in '96, Mike left the band soon after to be replaced by Melvin Taylor. The band then seemed to go through a bad period. Dulles had an injury at work which made it pretty difficult to play drums any more since he was unable to hold is sticks with any kind of grip. Moral was low, gigs were poor and the decision was taken to give it a break.

It took about a week before Graeme, Dick and Mark got together in a pub, got drunk and realised they were being a bit silly. WIthout Dulles, Melvin and Jules, Mark sourced Paul Stevens and Darren Chapman from his work to fill the vacant drum and bass positions. Things started looking up again and in '97 the band started recording what was to be their most successful CD, "Where the Skeletons Dance". Mark's heavier rock influence was clearly showing by this time and the band became heavier and (some would say) more grown up, ditching the light 'Folk Rock'style and morphiny into a 'Folk Punk' band. After recording guide versions of the first three tracks for the album (where it was later discovered that Paul was suffering from a fractured wrist - not good for a drummer), TUT's famous member curse came back. Darren left the band, and after a steaming performance on the Greenpeace stage at the Glastonbury Festival, Paul went too.

June 1997, and Paul 'H' (no, we never knew his surname) came in on bass. Dulles carries on filling in until Feb 1998 when Rick Burtonshaw (whome Mark met a couple of years earlier at a rehearsal studio) joined the band on drums. After learning the set it was back in the studio to start the Skeletons CD again from scratch. Rick's heavier rock The rock style helped harden the band's sound further, and the CD was released in 1999. Mid 99, Rick left due to family commitments and Paul Stevens (now Wright), the drummer Rick replaced, came back in with his shiney new V-Drum electronic kit.

TUT split up at the end of 2000 after lead singer, Graeme Hobbs, moved to Spain and electric violinist, Mark Knight, joined well known Bristol Folk Rock band 'K-Passa'. Not to be held back by this TUT guitarist, Dick Langford, decided to carry on the TUT name with surviving drummer, Paul Stevens (now Wright), and bass player, Matt Szul. With the aid of Matt's wife, Sam, on accordian and 'The Electrics' fiddler player, Tim Cotterall, TUT2 came about playing old TUT and new tunes in a much quieter laid back style."

Germany is the biggest country in Europe (if we don’t take into account Russia). Moreover, there is a strong following of bands such as The Pogues, The Men They Couldn’t Hang, Oysterband, etc. As a result, there are a hell of a lot of Celtic Punk and Celtic Rock bands around that country. I have tried to include in this sampler different bands from the usual ones (Fiddler’s Green, Across the Border, The Porters, Mr. Irish Bastard ...). It was a little bit hard, but finally I have found some interesting bands.

Boggin Leprechaun is a band from Nuremberg (Bavaria). This six-piece outfit released an EP in 2007 “The Boggin EP”,and has just released their brand new album, “Within Blood, Stout & Roll”. All the tracks in this sampler are taken from the EP.

www.boggin.eu

De Drangdüwels come from Westerau, in the North of the country. This band is special, since they make a Pogues-influenced music, but they sing in a German dialect called Plattdüütsch (Low German). My favourite song is St. Pauli. I think that it is a song about a football team from Sankt Pauli district in Hamburg.

Discography:

“Hart an Wind” (2003)

“FC. St. Pauli & de Störbeker-Trilogie” (2004)

“Hold Fast” (2004)

The CDs can be bought at

www.steintafel.de/cd/plattdeutsch.shtml

www.drangduewels.de

Nycromatic are also from the North of Germany, from Lübeck, another Hanseatic city. These 5 guys released one album in 2006, “Green Hills, Red Rivers” and they will release the follow-up in 2009, “Celtic Nights”

www.nycromatic.de

Finally, a different band called The Gang of Erin that play Irish Hillbilly. Till now this band has only recorded a demo.
